Standing in the Cultural District of Saadiyat Island is the newly opened Louvre Abu Dhabi. It was said that the museum is part of a 30-year agreement between the city of Abu Dhabi and the French Government. The museum was recently opened last November 2017 and has now became one of the best attraction in the capital.
According to its official website: the Louvre Abu Dhabi is a new cultural beacon, bringing different cultures together to shine fresh light on the shared stories of humanity. The museum ‘represents the dynamic nature of the contemporary Arab world, while celebrating the region’s vibrant multicultural heritage.’ Their aim is to induce respect, curiosity, learning and self-reflection.
Are you into history, a museum buff or an art enthusiast? I’m sure you will love the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Here are a few things to expect on your visit.
The Architecture & Design
The museum is designed as a “seemingly floating dome structure”; its web-patterned dome allowing the sun to filter through. The overall effect is meant to represent “rays of sunlight passing through date palm fronds in an oasis.”
If the Louvre in Paris has its iconic Glass Pyramid structure and its building has an old world’s charm, The Louvre Abu Dhabi is the opposite. The contemporary structure and design is very impressive and that alone is already a magnificent work of art. Most probably, sooner or later, its metal dome will be recognized as an iconic piece of architecture.
Ticket Entrance Fee
The museum ticket cost 60 AED per person (one day pass). You also have the option to join the Art Club and be a member so as to enjoy exclusive benefits. (Please check their website for more information.)
The Collections
Above are few of the displayed pieces. The galleries are divided into sections. Within the museum, each section were arranged chronologically, not by geography.
Painting Collections
The painting collections are impressive enough for me as they have original pieces of Leonardo Da Vinci, Edouard Manet, Vincent Van Gogh, Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso and more.
Modern Art Exhibit
Fountain of Light – Ai Wei Wei (2016)
This piece of art was created out of 10 chandeliers from China. A reference also to the Tower of Babel, the work questions the nation of diversity and what is shared in our contemporary globalized world.
The Interiors
I can’t call myself an art fanatic or even a museum buff, but I really do appreciate and admire artworks from the world’s famous artists. In fact the reason why Derick and I were excited to visit the Louvre Abu Dhabi was because of the controversial painting of Leonardo Da Vinci – Salvator Mundi. We thought that it was already displayed as their main attraction. Unfortunately it wasn’t yet. Perhaps it is best to save it for our next visit. Nevertheless we were not disappointed. We saw what Louvre Abu Dhabi has to offer.
What I love about the Louvre Abu Dhabi is the fact that the numbers of collections were not overwhelming. You can spend time examining each piece without rushing. The place was not overrun with people. The galleries and items showcased are in chronological order. Overall, we were impressed!
wow te, aabangan ko yung controversial painting ni Leo na worth $450 million 😀

Wow! The modern part reminds me a little bit of the Guggenheim museums both in Venice and in Bilbao.
But I must say I was surprised to see that there was a Louvre in Abu Dhabi, too…

Haven’t been to the Guggenheim museums in Venice and Bilbao. Maybe that would be something to look forward to in our next European sojourn. Thanks for the comment 🙂

Such amazing architecture! It looks like such a rich country. Is it really expensive there?

Expensive is such a subjective term. Although the cost of living in Dubai for instance is quite high. However, if you’re a professional working there it’s not much of a problem. Compared to Dubai, the cost of living in Abu Dhabi is slightly lower even though it is the capital of UAE. The museum is really amazing by the way specially if you see it up close and personal, Thanks for dropping by 🙂

Oh wow, I love the museum building itself! So is there an agreement between the museums in Abu Dhabi and France to share collections as well? That would be an amazing opportunity!

Hi Katherine. During our visit, my husband and I saw the Versailles collection displayed in one of the building in Louvre Abu Dhabi. We came to know that the collections were on loan from the Louvre in Paris for a month. So most probably there is some sort of memorandum of agreement between the two Louvre museums Thanks for dropping by 🙂

The collections sound incredible, and the architecture of the museum seems to deserve a visit on its own accord. It is on my list of things to do on my next visit to UAE (my parents live in Dubai, and I visit often :)).

Hi Denny. If that is the case, you should pay this museum a visit next time you visit your folks in Dubai. It’s about a two hour car ride from Dubai. Thanks for the comment 🙂

The architecture is visually stunning to look at. I was sold at the sight of that pool itself against a white backdrop. Interestingly is there anything on history of the cultures or is it only about Europe? I went to a musuem in Jakarta where I was taken aback by the brilliant story telling on how Indonesia’s culture has evolved. Anything which shows a fusion of cultures?

My boyfriend is literally on the way to Dubai as we speak and was looking to go to Abu Dhabi! I have never visited and had no clue they had anything like this. Although not surprised either. I am not too much of a fan of the Lourve in France, mostly because of the tourists, but with free entry and it being less crowded, I’d definitely check it out.

Actually there is an entry fee of 63 Dirhams per person (which includes tax). Hope you and your boyfriend would be able to check it out soon. Thanks for dropping by 🙂
