Derick and I were well aware that there is so much to see and many things to do in Slovenia. However, we decided to get a tour that took us to Slovenia for only 24 hours. Which was not bad though since we got the glimpse of the country’s capital Ljubljana and we saw the magical Lake Bled. So instead of complaining, we decided to just make the most of our 24 hours in the country.
What could be the best way to spend your night in Ljubljana? We actually had 3 options and the choices were: 1. Explore the Ljubljana Castle 2. Enjoy the night scenes in the city 3. Spend an Authentic Slovenian EveningĀ (Folk Show and Dinner). We chose the latter because we wanted to know more of the cultural side of the country and of course the food.
Our tour leader organized our optional activities. She brought us to the oldest Trattoria in the city, the Gostilna Sestica, This trattoria (or restaurant) is one of the few original restaurants that are still open to entertain guests since 1776.
The ticket cost 30 euros per person. It included a 3 course dinner and one round of selected beverages.
The very accommodating staff in their traditional costumes served us local Slovenian wine together with nuts and dried fruits as we entered the trattoria.
The restaurant has traditional Slovenian ambiance from the furnishings to the decors. It has an open layout design that can accommodates big groups of tourists and it has a spacious dance floor too.
Our night started with traditional Slovenian music played by in-house musicians of the trattoria. The music as well as the musicians were very entertaining. Unfortunately, even the good music was not enough to make up for the fact that our food were served very late and the service was painfully slow.
The food was served at around 7:30 in the evening and everyone was so hungry already.
Green Salad with beans
Cheese and Sausage Platter
Assorted local cheese as starter
Slovenian Fried Chicken
Chicken and Pork Combo with mashed potato.
Poached pear in red wine with heavy cream
While eating our dinner the music continues.
After our dinner the Folk show started. There were lots of dancing, music playing and games which everyone enjoyed so much.
Ā The exchanged hat game. This was by far the most exciting and funniest game I’ve seen.
Some helpful Slovenian words for survival.
Our group during the Slovenian Evening
We had a fantastic night. If you want to experience Slovenian hospitality then you might consider and experience the Slovenian Evening here at Gostilna Sestica. The only let down for me was the food. Our main dishes were bland and the dessert was not properly cooked. I hope they can improved on that in the future. Overall, it was fun filled night that we will never forget.

I would have gone with the same option. Love culture. The food looks nice – shame it wasnāt. Maybe that is their style- did you have any good meals whilst out there? I love their attire. Did you find a lot of Slovenia still kept to the traditions?

Not sure about the typical flavors in their food. But the ones we tasted were bland. Slovenia in general has modernized already. But you will still see small pockets of their traditions in the old town. Thanks for the comment š

Being from Croatia, I have visited Ljubljana several times. And I find it to be charming! Sorry to hear that you haven’t enjoyed the food in Gostilna Å estica. If you like wine, have you tried some Slovenian wines? Just for info, Slovenia has good quality Sauvignon and Chardonnay…

Wow, this is such a great place. I love that even that you guys had only 24 hours to explore this place, but you both made it extraordinary by embracing and immersing yourself in their culture. This must be just a glimpse of Slovenian rich culture, but surely this has become your memorable journey. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

This evening looks like a lot of fun. I really like the look of the traditional Slovenian costumes. And the exchange hat game looks entertaining. It’s too bad the food wasn’t better but maybe they can improve it.

Nice. It is always interesting to see the country’s traditional performances I am kind of thinking, the performance, is it something they do for real or is it only a show to the tourists? Because in Russia (where I am from) they would put on costumes and do things, which they never do in real life, just to impress the tourists.

Hi Alex… Based on what I know, they just put the costumes just for show. Thanks for the comment š

Ooooh! I’m Slovenian and you’re so kind in your review considering that the food was not satisfactory. That should be the highlight! If nobody tells them straight, they would keep serving it at too low standards. It makes me angry. š¦ I’m glad that you at least enjoyed the entertainment. You must know that this may be Slovenian folklore but it’s not something all Slovenians enjoy. I’d say it has got rather old-fashioned by now. Anyway, this was just one evening, for a more authentic, not straight-for-tourist experience you must come back. š

Flavours of traditional food combined with touches of local music. That is an unbeatable combo. The dishes look delicious and you played a hat game too. We had a similar experience in Lisbon, where we watched a Fado music show over dinner.

Given the choices you had, and the limited time at your disposal I might have selected the same experience. Enjoying local cuisine with great wine and music certainly fits my idea of a great evening. However, It was disappointing that the food did not live up to your expectations. I hope you had a good time afterwards.

Staff in traditional costumes serving food sounds awesome. Not many restaurants do such a thing back here in India. There’s nothing better than a traditional Folk dinner to know the culture of the country. Glad to know tat there are still such activities done to bring together people of different backgrounds.
